sdtfontadm - Font Administrator
SYNOPSIS
/usr/dt/bin/sdtfontadm
AVAILABILITY
This command is available with the System Administrator's
package.
DESCRIPTION
sdtfontadm is a program that helps system administrators and
everyday users to install, delete and find information about
fonts.
USAGE
The main window provides an alphabetized list of the fonts
installed on the current host. Several menus, lists and
buttons are provided to permit actions on these fonts.
Menus:
Fonts
Delete
Deletes the currently selected font or fonts. A dialog
appears to confirm this action.
Install...
Opens the Install dialog which permits installation of
new fonts to a workstation or a NeWSprint printer if
the host is a printer server.
Attributes...
Opens the Font Attributes window which provides more
information about the selected font.
Find...
Opens the Find dialog to let the user search for a
string within a font name.
Aliases...
Displays the Aliases dialog containing an alphabetized
list of font aliases. An alias is not a font, but a
logical name which represents a font.
Exit Quits the Font Administrator.
Options
Modify Font Path...
Opens the Modify Font Path dialog. Important note:
This function is available only when the user is root.
Set Sample Text...
Opens the Set Sample Text dialog which may be used to
set the default sample text displayed in the main win-
dow and Install dialog.
Font Sets...
Opens the Font Sets dialog to permit viewing and mani-
pulation of font sets, including font set creation.
Important note: This function is available in locales
which use font sets and when the user is root.

Overview...
Provides a brief introduction to the Font Administrator
application, instructions how to start the Font
Administrator, and links to major portions of the Help
volume.
Tasks...
Provides step-by-step instructions on how to perform
tasks with Font Administrator.
Reference...
Lists and describes Font Administrator windows, dia-
logs, and menus.
On Item
Changes the cursor to the On Item cursor, so that you
can request more information on a particular Font
Administrator screen item by clicking on the item.

About Font Administrator...
Provides the Font Administrator version number, dis-
claimers, copyright and licensing information.
Sample Text Point Size
This menu controls the size of the sample text in the sample
text area immediately below it.
Screen Resolution
This menu displays the screen resolutions available for the
currently-selected font and point size. The indicated reso-
lution is in units of dots per inch, horizontal by vertical.
Buttons:
Delete
Deletes the currently selected font or fonts. A dialog
appears to confirm this action.
Attributes...
Opens the Font Attributes window which provides more
information about the selected font. Select only one
font before clicking the Attributes button.
The Installation Dialog
This window permits preview and installation of fonts. The
list of fonts which may be installed appears in the main
scrolling window.
Other features of the Install dialog are as follows:
List Fonts From
Selects the source of the fonts to be installed. Click
"Other Media..." if the source is a CD-ROM or
diskette. Click "Directory..." if the source is a file
system directory.
Sample Text
Displays text in the typeface of the currently selected
font. The text may be modified by simply typing in the
text field. The newly-typed text will remain for the
duration of the session. Use the Set Sample Text
option on the main window to set this permanently. If
multiple fonts are selected, no text appears.
Install Fonts For
Allows the user to choose to install fonts to the sys-
tem or a NeWSprint Printer. If "NeWSprint Printer" is
chosen, the attached menu of local printers can be used
to specify which is currently active. This choice is
available only if the current host is a print server.
Install to
Sets the file system directory into which the fonts
will be installed. Click "Directory..." to display the
file system browser.
Destination
Indicates the currently set directory to which fonts
will be installed.
Total Disk Space Required
Estimates the amount of disk space required to install
the currently selected fonts.
Total Disk Space Available
Indicates the amount of disk space available on the
file system to which the Destination directory belongs.
Install
Copies the selected fonts into the current destination
directory. If a font with the same name is already
installed on the current host, a conflict dialog
appears. The area immediately below this button shows
status updates while the installation progresses.
Select All
Selects all fonts in the list.
Attributes...
Opens the Font Attributes window which provides more
information about the selected font.
Cancel
Closes the Install dialog.
Help Provides more information about the Install dialog.
Other Media Dialog
This dialog acquires access to a floppy or CD-ROM device for
Font Administrator. "Check Fonts From" allows selection of
either Floppy (diskette) or CD-ROM devices.
For systems containing multiple CD-ROM drives, only the
first is available. When a drive type has been selected,
"Check" to access the drive on behalf of Font Administrator.
If another application has control of the device, a message
will appear in the status line at the bottom of the window.
In most cases, it will be necessary to go to the other
application and release the device from use before Font
Administrator can access it.
Eject
Releases Font Administrator's lock on the selected
medium and ejects it.
Close
Closes the Other Media dialog, but does not release the
Font Administrator's lock on the medium. Use "Eject"
to release the lock.
Help Provides more information about the Other Media dialog.
The Font Attributes Dialog
This informational dialog provides secondary data about the
currently selected font. If multiple fonts are selected, no
information appears. In particular, the following facts are
provided:
Font The name of the font as it appears in the main window
or Install dialog.
XLFD Name
For those familiar with the details of the implementa-
tion of the X11 Window System, this field contains the
X Logical Font Description name of the font. This is
the font name which often appears inside font files.
If the name selected is an alias, then this field shows
the XLFD name of the font that the alias is pointing
to. If a font does not have an XLFD name, the name of
the font as it appears in the main window or Install
dialog is displayed.
Location
The UNIX file system directory on the current host in
which the font file resides.
Foundry
The foundry, or font manufacturer or vendor.
Character Set
The character collection or set supported by this font,
generally an industry-standard collection.
Spacing
Indicates whether the font is fixed- or
proportionally-spaced. In a fixed-spaced font, all
characters are exactly the same width. For example,
such fonts are appropriate for tables and for indicat-
ing computer text in technical manuals. The majority
of fonts have characters whose widths vary depending on
the character shapes and are thus labeled Proportional.
Close
Closes the Font Attributes dialog.
Help Provides more information about the items in the Font
Attributes dialog.
Aliases Dialog
This dialog displays a scrolling list of all the font
aliases currently in use by the system.
More Expands the Aliases dialog to display the following
information: the X Logical Font Description (XLFD)
name of the Alias, the name of the actual font underly-
ing the alias, the XLFD name of the underlying font and
the file system directory location of the alias. The
button named "Less" may be pushed to return the Aliases
dialog to its previous size and configuration.
Close
Closes the Aliases dialog.
Help Displays more information about the Aliases dialog
The Set Sample Text Dialog
This dialog causes Font Administrator to remember the text
used in the Sample Text fields of the main window and
Install dialog between sessions.
Sample Text to Display
The field immediately below this label is used to type
in the new sample text.
OK Applies the changes and closes the dialog.
Apply
Applies the changes without closing the dialog.
Reset
Returns the dialog to the state just after the last
Apply in the current session of the dialog or, if Apply
has not been used in the current session, to the state
of the dialog at the start of the current invocation.
Cancel
Backtracks all changes to the last Apply in the current
session, or if Apply has not been used, to the state at
the start of the current session and closes the dialog.

Sample Text.
SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR INFORMATION
Note that the Modify Font Path dialog and the Font Sets Dia-
log are restricted for system administrator use only.
Modify Font Path Dialog
This window permits a font administrator to configure the
font path of the current host or NeWSprint Printer. Because
this is a potentially destructive operation, this feature is
restricted to the system administrator (the superuser).
This window does not appear unless the invoker has system
administrator privileges.
A few words about font path configuration. The font path is
akin to the UNIX PATH environment variable. It contains a
list of directories which are searched, in order, whenever a
font is requested. Unless the font is already cached by the
window system, the request is filled from the first direc-
tory which has the font name in question, with one excep-
tion. The windows server searches all directories for a
pre-scaled bitmap font which exactly matches the request
before using a scalable font of the same name to satisfy the
request. Because it is better to scale from a scalable form
of a font than from a bitmap, it is important that direc-
tories of scalable fonts, such as F3, Type1 and Speedo,
appear earlier in the font path than directories of bitmap
fonts having the same font names, such as 75dpi.
When an ordinary user installs fonts to a directory not part
of the persistent font path, this directory is implicitly
added to the user's personal font path setting. When fonts
are installed to a new directory by the system administra-
tor, no corresponding action is taken. If it is desired
that the new directory be added to the system font path,
this must be done explicitly.
The window system font path should not be taken lightly.
The default font path as it is shipped has been ordered with
great care and each element placed in its location for a
particular reason. Tampering with this ordering can lead to
problems such as strange looking text or even the server
failing to restart. Be sure you know what you are doing,
make only one change at a time and record the previous state
of the font path as the Modify Font Path dialog has no Undo
capability. The window system font path is stored in file
OWconfig in directory server/etc within the OpenWindows ins-
tallation directory hierarchy. The modifications made to
the window system font path will be lost if the new release
of OpenWindows is installed.
With the above in mind, this dialog can be used to add
directories of newly-installed fonts to the existing font
path, to delete directories which are no longer being used
or insert new font directories earlier in the font path.
Modify Font Path for
Used to choose between potential multiple copies of
OpenWindows on the current host, or, if the environment
is that of a NeWSprint server, a printer. The default
choice is the OpenWindows installation in /usr/openwin.
If however other OpenWindows installations exist, as
might be the case on an NFS server serving heterogene-
ous architectures, for example, it may be specified by
selecting the directory at the top of the installation
via the file system browser available from the "Direc-
tory..." button. If "NeWSprint Printer" is chosen, the
attached menu contains the names of the local printers
which can be used to specify which is currently active.
Current Font Path Listing for
Indicates which copy of OpenWindows is currently being
examined, or which printer. The scrolling list below
shows, in order, the directories which comprise the
font path.
Locale:
This item only appears in locales for which Solaris
uses fonts in addition to those available for the C
locale. When this item appears, its menu will have
exactly two items: "C" and the name of the locale.
When the "C" menu item is chosen, font path operations
will be undertaken on the default C font path whereas
choosing the named locale permits operation on the
locale-specific font path. The locale-specific font
path should be considered to always follow the C font
path in terms of system usage, i.e. fonts in the C font
path take precedence. Note that NeWSprint printers do
not support the concept of locale-based font paths.
Move Up
Pressing SELECT on this button exchanges the currently
selected font path element with the one immediately
preceding it, unless the selected element is first, in
which case, it does nothing.
Move Down
Exchanges the currently selected font path element with
the one immediately following it, unless the selected
element is last in which case it does nothing.
Delete
Deletes the selected font path element.
Add New
Adds the font path element which is currently listed
under New Font Path Element into the current font path.
The new element is always added to the end of the list.
New Font Path Element
This field contains the directory which was the most
recent destination for installed fonts in the current
Font Administrator session. If no installation has
occurred in the current session, it is left blank.
This file system browser may be invoked with the
"Directory..." button to choose another directory to
add to the font path and it may be added via the "Add
New" button.
OK Used to apply the changes made and close the dialog.
Check the status line of the main window for messages.
Apply
Applies the changes made without closing the dialog.
Check the status line of this dialog for messages.
Reset
Backtracks to the state of the dialog just after the
last Apply, or if Apply has not been used, to the state
present at the invocation of the dialog.
Cancel
Ignores all changes made since the last Apply and
closes the dialog.

Font Sets Dialog
In a locale (5) which employs font sets, this dialog permits
(1) viewing of current font sets, (2) creation of new fonts
and (3) modification of existing font sets.
In certain locales, multiple fonts of different character
sets must be grouped together in order to have an appropri-
ate representation of written language displayed on the
screen. The character sets used in the grouping are speci-
fied by the currently-defined locale and cannot be modified.
Applications in these locales are expected to use font sets
rather than individual fonts themselves. Thus, naming and
configuration of font sets is an important issue for locales
which use them.
Search For Fonts by:
A font set is defined as a group of fonts which all
share identical values in their Family, Weight,
SetWidth, AddStyle, Slant and Point Size fields. One
or more font sets exist on a system when a group of
fonts with identical values exists for each character
set which is required in that locale.
Family:
The menu button permits choice of a Font Family, a
typeface name, which supports at least one of the char-
acter sets required by the locale. Examples include
"Lucida", "Gothic" or "Ming". A value must be chosen
for this field.
Weight:
The menu button permits choice of a Weight appropriate
to the current font Family. Typical values for Weight
are "Medium", "Bold", "Extra Bold", etc. This field is
optional. It may be set to the special keyword "All"
which instructs the Font Sets Dialog to accept all pos-
sible values or it may be set to "None" which instructs
the Font Sets Dialog to ensure that no value is present
in this field.
SetWidth:
Applies to the current font Family. Typical values for
SetWidth are "Narrow", "Condensed", "Extra Wide", etc.
May be set to "All" or "None".
AddStyle:
Applies to the current font Family. Typical values for
AddStyle are "Sans", "Serif", "Fancy", etc. May be set
to "All" or "None".
Slant:
Applies to the current font Family. Typical values for
Slant are "Italic", "Oblique", "Roman", etc. May be
set to "All" or "None".
Point Size:
Applies to font Point Size. A value of 0 (zero)
implies a scalable font. A value must be chosen for
this field.
Search
Click SELECT on this button to search for font sets
meeting the criteria that have been specified in the
six fields above. The message area at the bottom of
the dialog indicates the number of font sets which
satisfy the criteria, possibly zero. If one or more
complete font sets were found, the Complete Font Sets
Dialog now appears; otherwise, the Incomplete Font Sets
Dialog is brought up.
Clear
Sets to "None" the values in the Weight, SetWidth,
AddStyle and Slant fields. Returns the Family and
Point Size fields to their default values.
Close
Closes the Font Sets dialog.
Help Provides more information about the features of the
Font Sets dialog.
Complete Font Sets Dialog
Complete Font Set
Indicates the number of font sets which met the search
criteria. For convenience, these font sets are num-
bered (within the context of Font Administrator only)
and this message describes which font set is currently
being considered. For example, "1 of 4". The com-
ponent fonts of the current font set are displayed in
the window below in two columns. The left hand column
indicates the typeface name while the right hand
indicates which character set requirement is satisfied
by that font.
Next Pressing SELECT on this button displays in the window
below the component fonts of the next font set in
sequence. This is reflected in an update of the "Com-
plete Font Set" message.
Previous
Operates in inverse fashion from "Next".
Sample Text:
The area immediately below the "Sample Text:" label
displays sample characters from all the fonts in the
current font set. Which characters are displayed may
be changed by simply typing in the text area.
Replace With:
When an individual font in the above window is
selected, the window below the "Replace With:" label
displays all the other fonts in the system which
satisfy the selected font's character set and Point
Size requirements, but which differ in Family and other
attributes. These fonts may be used to replace the
font which is listed in the current font set above.
Replace
After selecting a single font from the "Replace With:"
list, click SELECT on this button to use that font to
replace the one currently being used for that character
set in current font set. This is a non- destructive
operation as no changes occur until "Name Font Set..."
is invoked. Use the "Replace" button to try out dif-
ferent combinations and view the results in the "Sample
Text" area.
Name Font Set...
Click this button to make one or more font replacements
permanent. This brings up the Name Font Set dialog.
Close
Closes the dialog.

Name Font Set Dialog
Having replaced one or more components of a font set, or
having added components to an incomplete font set, it is
necessary to uniquely name the resulting new font set and
save the changes to the system.
Type in a Family Name:
Typing in a typeface name for the new font set is
required. The name may be an existing one or entirely
new, however it must use ISO8859-1 (Latin-1) characters
exclusively and the name in its entirety, including the
attributes below, must not already exist on the system.
Non-unique names will be detected by the dialog when
clicking on the Save button and a prompt will appear to
request a new name. A value must be chosen for this
field.
Select Other Characteristics
To help make the name unique and to better describe the
new font set, it is also possible to specify the fol-
lowing field values.
Weight
The menu button permits choice of a Weight appropriate
to the current font Family. Typical values for Weight
are "Medium", "Bold", "Extra Bold", etc. This field is
optional.
SetWidth
Typical values for SetWidth are "Narrow", "Condensed",
"Extra Wide", etc. Optional.
AddStyle
Typical values for AddStyle are "Sans", "Serif",
"Fancy", etc. Optional.
Slant
Typical values for Slant are "Italic", "Oblique",
"Roman", "Other", etc. This field is required.
New Font Set Name
Displays the complete font set name as it is con-
structed.
Save Make the new font set name permanent. If the new name
already exists in the system, an error will result and
one or more of the characteristics must be changed in
order for Save to be successfully completed. Note that
these updates are written to the file
/etc/openwin/fontadm_fonts/<locale>/fonts.alias. The
status line at the bottom of the dialog will be updated
when Save is successful.
Cancel
Ignores all changes made since the last Save and closes
the dialog.
Help Provides more information about the features of the
dialog.
Incomplete Font Set Dialog
Sample Text:
The area immediately below the "Sample Text:" label
displays sample characters from all the fonts which are
present in the current incomplete font set. Which
characters are displayed may be changed by simply typ-
ing in the text area.
Replace With:
When an individual font, or in the absence of a font, a
character set, in the above window is selected, the
window below the "Replace With:" label displays all the
other fonts in the system which satisfy the selected
font's character set and Point Size requirements, but
which differ in Family and other attributes. These
fonts may be used to replace the font which is listed
in the current font set above.
Replace
After selecting a single font from the "Replace With:"
list, click SELECT on this button to use that font to
replace the one currently being used for that character
set in current font set. This is a non- destructive
operation as no changes occur until "Name Font Set..."
is invoked. Use the "Replace" button to try out dif-
ferent combinations and view the results in the "Sample
Text" area.
Name Font Set...
Click this button to make one or more font replacements
permanent. This brings up the Name Font Set dialog.
Close
Closes the dialog.

ENVIRONMENT
X Terminals.
Special considerations must be taking into account when
using Font Administrator on an X terminal.
The Font Adminstrator runs correctly on an X terminal.
Specifically, it can be used to examine, install or delete
fonts, but it is important to realize that all operations
affect fonts on the host from which Font Administrator was
started, and not necessarily fonts as used by the X termi-
nal.
Thus, when installing fonts, the Font Adminstrator copies
them onto the host machine's disk; likewise, any deletion
removes them from the host's disk. When viewing fonts,
because it is possible an X terminal does not share all the
fonts which are available on a particular host, the Font
Adminstrator may not be able to display the sample text for
a font or fonts.
For system administrators, this also affects Modify Font
Path operations. The font path which is modified will
always be the one which is specific to the host on which
Font Adminstrator is running. You should consult the docu-
mentation which arrived with your X terminal for information
on how to configure this font path.
SUPPORTED FORMATS
Font Administrator supports the following font formats:
Adobe Type 1 - ASCII (.pfa)
Adobe Type 1 - Binary (.pfb)
Adobe Type 0 (.ps)
Adobe Type 3 (.ps)
CID
PCF bitmap (.pcf)
TrueType (.ttf)
Fonts of other formats can still be used by the system, but
are not visible to Font Adminstrator.
